She had a great smile and loved interacting and getting to know people. Upon retiring from said position, she returned to Memphis and worked in the Shelby County Library System.Marie was a joyful and wonderful woman. For six years she served as the administrator of the of the West Las Vegas Library. In 1988 she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and worked for the Clark County Library System. After earning a master’s degree in library science at Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia, she served as a librarian in the Memphis City Schools.Marie retired from the Memphis City School District after 30 years of service. Upon graduating from Lemoyne, she was employed by the Memphis City School District as an elementary teacher. ![]() She was also a devoted member of the Douglass Alumni Association.While earning her bachelor’s degree, she taught in Mississippi, Arkansas and Shelby County, Memphis, TN. She attended Lemoyne College (now Lemoyne-Owens College, Memphis, TN) where she became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. She attended Douglass Elementary School and graduated from Douglass High School. She transitioned Friday, February 2, 2024, at St John’s Nursing Home, Rochester, New York.Marie spent her adolescent years in the Douglass community of North Memphis. Marie Dukes was born Monday, July 9, 1928, in Memphis, Tennessee with Jacob Dukes and Margaret Morrison Dukes as her parents.
